Three gentle invitations

My story

I'm Irina, and this little shop has my whole heart.

I grew up in Romania, where food was never just fuel. It was community, culture and care on a plate. Cooking from scratch wasn’t something special, it was simply how things were done, alongside fruit and veg shops and farmers markets that were part of everyday life.

Food has always been in my blood. I started at the very bottom as a commis chef and worked my way up to Junior Sous Chef in a Michelin starred kitchen. But it was this little shop in Brampton that captured me first, as a customer, falling in love with its produce and its people.

When the previous owners retired, I couldn’t bear to see it disappear. So I did everything I could to buy it myself. I took over at the end of January this year, and it feels like a fresh start and a whole new chapter.

When you know time is precious, you pour your heart into things.

Irina, Little Gem

The name Little Gem is a gentle double meaning, a nod to the Little Gem lettuce, and to something small and precious that’s worth protecting. Which is exactly what this shop is to Brampton.

Nourishment notes

A little of what’s growing on the blog, recipes to cook tonight and stories about the food on your plate.

Warm Roasted Cauliflower & Crispy Chickpea Salad

Warm Roasted Cauliflower & Crispy Chickpea Salad

A golden, fragrant bowl full of texture, spice, and nourishing goodness. If you still think cauliflower is plain, this recipe is here to change your mind.

Cauliflower: Stop Treating It Like Broccoli’s Boring Cousin.

Cauliflower has had a bit of an unfair reputation over the years as the pale, plain vegetable sitting quietly on the side of the plate. But it is secretly one of the most versatile, hardworking ingredients in the entire kitchen.

Creamy Butternut Squash & Apple Soup

A comforting, naturally sweet soup with a touch of autumn warmth. The natural sweetness of roasted squash pairs so beautifully with the gentle tartness of a crisp apple, balanced with warming spices.

Demystifying the Butternut Squash

Butternut squash seems to fall into two categories for most people. You either love it... or you stare at it on the shelf thinking, “I wouldn’t even know where to begin with that thing.”
Health Benefits of Sweet Potatoes

What Are The Health Benefits of Sweet Potatoes

Not all foods fuel the body in the same way. Today we are looking at the health benefits of the beloved sweet potato.
Sweet Potato, Coconut and Miso Soup

Sweet Potato, Coconut & Miso Soup

There is something special about a bowl of soup made from simple ingredients. The kind of meal that does not need complicated techniques or a long list of ingredients, just a few carefully chosen flavours coming together to create something comforting, warming, and satisfying.

COMING SOON

“If you value quality, ethics, community spirit, and genuinely kind human service, this little green grocery in Brampton is an absolute treasure. Irina, the owner, is one of the loveliest people you could hope to meet. She truly cares about her customers and always has time for everyone who walks through the door. Her shop reflects her values completely, thoughtful, ethical, welcoming, and community-minded. She actively supports other local businesses too, showcasing local products in store, which makes shopping here feel even more meaningful. The quality of the fruit and vegetables is second to none. Yes, you may be able to buy cheaper produce in supermarkets, but there is simply no comparison in quality. Supermarket vegetables are often tasteless, watery, spoil quickly, and can already feel half gone before you get them home. Irina's produce is the opposite, fresh, vibrant, full of flavour, and grown to last. This shop is everything a local business should be, ethical, personal, high quality, community-focused, and run with real heart. Brampton is very lucky to have it.”
